El Peñol the town

El Peñol is the older town, rebuilt from scratch in the 1970s when the original was flooded for the dam. Most travelers skip it and miss a quiet plaza, a small museum about the dam history and a serious local food scene.

Worth 60 to 90 minutes if you have time. There are no major monuments, just a calm Antioquian town that lives off the lake.

Guatapé the town

Guatapé is the colorful pueblo with the painted zócalos, the malecón and the boat tours. It is the photogenic anchor of the day and where most lunches and afternoons happen.

Plan 2 to 3 hours minimum to walk the main streets, the plaza and the lakefront without rushing. More if you do a boat tour.

How to combine them

A typical day visits the rock first in the morning while it is cool, then drives 10 minutes to Guatapé pueblo for lunch and the afternoon. El Peñol can fit between the rock and Guatapé as a 30 minute coffee stop if you want.

If you only have time for two of the three, choose the rock and Guatapé pueblo. If you have a full slow day or two days, add El Peñol for the local flavor.

Three sights, three rhythms, all within 15 minutes of each other. Knowing what each one offers stops you from blowing the whole day on the rock and missing the colorful pueblo or the quiet town below.

Frequently asked questions

Should I visit the rock or Guatapé town?

Do the rock if you only have a couple of hours and want the view. Choose the town if you prefer walking, eating and photographing painted streets at your own pace.

How long do you need for both?

About six hours on site: 90 minutes at the rock, 20 minutes of transfer and two to three hours in the town, plus lunch.

Are El Peñol and Guatapé the same place?

No. They are two neighbouring municipalities. The rock sits between them and the colourful town everyone photographs is Guatapé.

Which is better for families?

The town, because it is flat, shaded and full of places to stop. Younger children often find the 740 steps hard going in the middle of the day.
